How Holiday Lights Damage Gutters and Roofs

Holiday light installation seems simple until the damage shows up in spring. The most common problems we see after the holiday season:

Gutter damage: Plastic S-clip hangers are the safest option but are often used incorrectly — snapped on when the gutter is cold and brittle can crack the gutter lip. Staples driven directly into gutter faces leave permanent holes. Wire wrapped around the gutter edge works loose over winter and can pull the gutter away from the fascia.

Shingle damage: Any nail, screw, or staple driven into a shingle creates a potential leak point. The shingle can reseal around small fasteners, but in Wisconsin’s freeze-thaw climate, the expansion and contraction around the fastener hole accelerates the failure. Even roofing staples are not designed for repeated seasonal installation and removal.

Fascia and soffit damage: Staple guns used on painted wood trim cause paint cracking, wood splitting along the staple line, and water infiltration into the trim over time. What looks like a quick and easy installation creates rot pathways that cost hundreds to repair.

Is the Safety Risk Real?

Yes. Ladders on frozen ground, eaves with ice, cold aluminum rungs, and pressure to finish before dark are a dangerous combination. Falls from ladders are the leading cause of construction-related fatalities and a major cause of consumer injury in December specifically. The cost of professional installation — typically $200-$500 — is modest compared to the cost of an emergency room visit.

What Can You Do Safely Yourself?

Single-story work from a stable ladder on unfrozen, level ground with a helper is generally safe. Use proper all-plastic clip systems (never staples on gutters, never nails on shingles). Install before the first hard freeze when conditions are safer.
