Why Do Downspouts Freeze in Wisconsin?

In Madison’s climate, overnight temperatures below 20°F are common from December through February. Metal downspouts (aluminum, steel) conduct cold extremely well — the pipe wall temperature drops to match the ambient temperature rapidly. When water flows through (from snow melt on a sunny day, or from a warm attic creating ice dam meltwater), it can partially freeze as it slows at bends or transitions, starting the blockage.

Once a partial freeze develops, subsequent water flow is blocked and freezes in turn, creating a complete ice plug. The pressure from water backing up can split aluminum downspouts, pop downspout-to-gutter connections, and overflow onto entry walks and driveways — creating dangerous black ice hazards.

What Damage Can Frozen Downspouts Cause?

A frozen and burst downspout can cost $150-$400 to replace depending on height and material. More seriously, overflow ice accumulating at your entry, driveway, or foundation creates significant slip hazards and liability. Water backing into the gutter from a frozen downspout adds weight and can pull gutters away from the fascia. Repeated freeze cycles without intervention causes cumulative damage to the entire gutter system.

Can You Prevent Frozen Downspouts Yourself?

Yes. Keeping downspouts clear of debris going into winter is the single most important prevention step — standing water in a clogged downspout freezes solid at the first hard freeze. Installing heat tape specifically rated for gutters and downspouts is the most reliable active prevention for problem downspouts. Ensuring the ground-level downspout extension slopes away properly prevents water ponding and freezing at the discharge point.
