What Causes Downspouts to Clog?

Downspouts are the drainage highway for everything that lands in your gutters — and in Madison, Wisconsin, that means a constant rain of debris. Spring brings maple samaras (“heli seeds”) that pack densely into gutter corners. Fall delivers waves of oak and maple leaves. For single-story homes with accessible downspouts, a garden hose on full pressure inserted from the top can often flush lighter clogs. A plumber’s snake works for denser blockages. However, two-story downspouts require ladder access at heights where falls are common. Underground extensions require specialized equipment.
