Oxalic Acid
Oxalic acid is a naturally occurring organic acid (found in rhubarb, spinach, and many woods) that is widely used in exterior cleaning as a rust stain remover, wood brightener, and mineral deposit treatment. In exterior cleaning, its two main applications are: (1) brightening wood after percarbonate cleaning — oxalic acid neutralizes the alkaline residue and chemically reduces the gray tannin oxidation on wood fibers, restoring the honey-gold color of cedar and the clean appearance of pressure-treated pine; and (2) removing iron-based rust stains from concrete, masonry, and stone — the acid chelates iron ions, making them water-soluble and removable by rinsing.
In depth
Oxalic acid is relatively mild compared to muriatic or phosphoric acid and is generally safe on masonry, wood, and concrete at working concentrations (1-5%). It does not etch glass and is slower-acting than stronger acids, which makes it more forgiving in field conditions. It must still be neutralized after use and kept off live plant tissue, as it damages leaves and roots at working concentrations.

Percarbonate
Sodium percarbonate is a solid granular compound that releases hydrogen peroxide and soda ash when dissolved in warm water — essentially an oxygen-based bleach. Unlike chlorine bleach, percarbonate does not contain chlorine, does not off-gas toxic fumes, and breaks down into water, oxygen, and soda ash after use. It is the primary chemistry behind most "wood-safe" deck, fence, and cedar-shake cleaners on the market.

Chelating Agent
A chelating agent is a chemical that grabs onto metal ions — calcium, iron, copper, magnesium — and holds them in solution so they can be rinsed away instead of bonding to a surface. The word comes from the Greek chele ("claw") because the molecule literally clamps onto the metal ion like a lobster claw. Common chelators include EDTA, oxalic acid, and citric acid.
Tannin
Tannins are natural plant polyphenols — the same compounds that give red wine, tea, and oak bark their characteristic astringent flavor. In exterior cleaning, they are the source of the persistent brown, red, and orange streaking that runs down siding beneath overhanging trees (especially oak, maple, walnut, and cedar) and the rusty shadows that form under wood decks and pergolas. Acorn drip, leaf accumulation, and cedar-shake runoff are classic tannin sources.
Alkaline Cleaner
An alkaline cleaner is a high-pH detergent (typically pH 10-14) that dissolves oil, grease, fats, protein stains, and atmospheric grime by saponifying fatty acids and emulsifying petrochemical contaminants. The most common alkaline ingredients in exterior cleaning are sodium hydroxide (caustic soda), sodium metasilicate, and potassium hydroxide, often combined with surfactants, chelators, and dye. Alkaline cleaners are the counterpart to acid cleaners — pros reach for alkaline chemistry when the stain is organic or petrochemical, and acid when the stain is mineral.
